There are three scholarship programs available to the children and grandchildren of Chapter members: the Charles Benson Scholarship Program, the Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Program, and the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program. All of these programs are intended to promote educational and professional development. A separate application is required for the International Scholarship Awards Program and some of the necessary information must be requested well ahead of the application deadline (see the link below for full information).
The Charles Benson Scholarship Program is named after the long-time chairman of the Monterey Regional Waste Management District, which has been a strong supporter of SWANA. The Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Program honors the man who dedicated countless hours to supporting the Gold Rush Chapter at numerous regional and national SWANA events. Both programs are administered by the Gold Rush Chapter and are open to the children and grandchildren (including adopted children and stepchildren) of a Member (Sponsor) in good standing of the Gold Rush Chapter. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:
To make the scholarship programs available to the largest number of applicants, applicants selected by the SWANA International Scholarship Committee for the Grant H. Flint Scholarship Awards Program will not be eligible for the Charles Benson/Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Programs.
The maximum individual award is $1,000 for the Charles Benson Scholarship Program. If three qualified applications are received, the chapter can award up to $500 to each applicant. The maximum individual award is $1,000 for the Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Program. If two qualified applications are received, the chapter can award up to $500 to each applicant.
In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must submit a completed Chapter application by May 1, 2010 to the Chair of the California Gold Rush Chapter Scholarship Committee, Richard Haughey, Golder Associates Inc., 425 Lakeside Drive, Sunnyvale, CA, Phone (408) 220-9240, FAX (408) 220-9224, rhaughey@golder.com. Download scholarship application here.
Financial information submitted with the application will be treated as confidential.
The application of an applicant who also submits an application for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program and who the Chapter Scholarship Committee recommends for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program will be held pending action by the SWANA International Scholarship Committee. If the recommended applicant is not selected by the SWANA International Scholarship Committee, the applicant will be considered for the Charles Benson/Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Programs.
If the Chapter Scholarship Committee recommends an applicant for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program, the Charles Benson/Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Programs awards will be made following announcement of the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program recipients.
If the Chapter Scholarship Committee does not recommend an applicant for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program, the Charles Benson/Arnold "Duffy" Thompson Scholarship Programs awards will be announced by July 1, 2010.
The Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program is administered by SWANA International and is named for the individual in southern California who was one of the driving forces in the formation of SWANA. The Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program is open to sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters of a Member (Sponsor) in good standing. There are three award categories:
Award amounts for the first two categories are $2,000. For the third category, the award amounts are $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.
Additional information and applications can be obtained at: http://www.swana.org/www/AWARDS/Scholarships/tabid/118/Default.aspx
Applications should be submitted by May 1, 2010 to the Chair of the California Gold Rush Chapter Scholarship Committee, Richard Haughey, Golder Associates Inc., 425 Lakeside Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94085, Phone (408) 220-9240, FAX (408) 220-9224.
As a result of the increased competition for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program, it is very important that applications be complete. The SWANA International Scholarship Committee will not consider incomplete applications. As some of the information required for the application may take some time to obtain, it is recommended that applicants get an early start on the applications.
SAT scores may be reported directly to the Chapter Scholarship Committee. The Designated Institution (DI) code for the Chapter Scholarship Committee is 5935. ACT scores may be reported directly to the Chapter Scholarship Committee by entering the Chapter address (see above) on the ACT Additional Score Report Request Form.
The Chapter Scholarship Committee will review the applications for completeness and determine whether to recommend an applicant to the SWANA International Scholarship Committee. The Chapter Scholarship Committee can make one recommendation for each scholarship category. Recommendations to the SWANA International Scholarship Committee will be made by June 1, 2010. Winners will be announced by the SWANA International Scholarship Committee by August 1, 2010.
Financial information submitted with the application will be treated as confidential.
If there are any questions regarding eligibility or application requirements for any of the above programs, contact the Chair of the California Gold Rush Chapter Scholarship Committee at the telephone number shown above.
